How a Used Audi S5 Turned Into a Detailing Business

I didn't set out to start a detailing business. I set out to not ruin my own car.

A few years ago I bought a used 2013 Audi S5. New to me, not new. It was the first car I had owned that I actually cared about keeping nice, and I had no real idea how to do that beyond running it through a wash and hoping.

The car was the problem, and then it was the reason

Learning to look after it properly turned out to be a rabbit hole with no bottom. I read, I watched, I asked people who knew more than me. Then I started buying things.

First it was decent soap and a couple of towels, which felt like a lot at the time. Then a machine polisher, because I had learned what swirl marks were and could suddenly see them on every panel in direct sun. Then a clay bar, then an iron remover, then sealant, then a better light to find the defects the first light had missed.

Every purchase solved one problem and revealed the next one. That's how this goes. You don't finish learning to detail a car so much as you notice you have stopped.

The moment it stopped being a hobby

What actually happened was mundane. I looked at what I had accumulated and realised it was no longer a shelf in a garage. It was a full detailing setup, and I knew how to use all of it.

Friends had started asking. Then people who weren't friends started asking. At some point the honest description of what I was doing stopped being "I detail my own car" and became something else, and TailorMade came out of that.

Why I still do it this way

One person details your car, start to finish, and that person is me. There's no crew and nothing gets handed off halfway. If something on your paint is wrong when you get it back, there's exactly one person to ask about it.

That's also why I come to you instead of asking you to come to me. Every service happens at your home, your office or your apartment, with our own power and water. Your car doesn't go anywhere and neither do you.

And it's why I measure paint before correcting it rather than guessing. Clear coat doesn't grow back. Somebody who learned on their own car has usually had the moment where they realise how easy it would be to take off more than they meant to, and it makes you careful in a way that reading about it doesn't.

What that means for your car

I still start every appointment the way I started with the Audi: by looking at it properly before touching it. We walk the vehicle together, I tell you what I would do and why, and you get the price before any work begins.

Sometimes that means telling you the car needs less than you booked. That isn't a sales technique. It's just what happens when the person quoting the job is the person who has to do it.

Most of my work is in Woodland Hills and Calabasas, and a good share of it's the same customers over and over. That's the part I didn't expect when I was standing in a garage with too many towels.

Before We Arrive

Two things to sort out when you book

A deposit secures your slot

Every appointment requires a deposit, applied in full to your final price. Detailing takes a block of hours per vehicle, so the deposit is how we hold that time for you rather than overbooking the day.

You don't need to stay for the whole service - just be there at the start for the walkthrough and at the end for the handoff.

Private property needs pre-approval

If your vehicle is at an office building, apartment complex or HOA-managed property, please get written approval from the landlord or property manager before your appointment.

We've been asked to leave parking lots mid-service more than once. Confirming access up front means your detail finishes properly instead of being cut short.
