To clean the interior of a car, work dry before wet and top to bottom. Take everything out, clean the floor mats separately, vacuum from the headliner down to the carpet, wipe hard surfaces with a mild interior cleaner on a towel, clean screens with a dry microfiber, and do the glass last. Anything you shampoo needs to dry within a day or two.
I'm Tyroo. I've done 300+ details around the west San Fernando Valley since April 2024, rated 5.0 across 41 Google reviews. This is the order I work in, what I keep away from each surface, and the point where doing it yourself stops being worth the Saturday.
Everybody starts the same way: one quick tidy, ten minutes, tops. Ninety minutes later you're lying across the back seat with a flashlight, holding a french fry from what might be the previous calendar year.

What to use on each surface, and what to keep away
Most interior damage comes from using the right effort with the wrong product. Screens, leather, Alcantara and the headliner each have one thing that ruins them, and carmakers say so in their own manuals.
| Surface | Clean it with | Keep away |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen | Dry microfiber made for displays | Glass cleaner, alcohol gels |
| Dash and plastics | Mild interior cleaner sprayed on a towel | Magic erasers, which are abrasive |
| Leather | A gentle leather cleaner, then conditioner | Alcohol, solvents, bleach |
| Synthetic (vegan) leather | Warm water and mild soap on a microfiber | Solvents, citrus, silicone products |
| Alcantara | Soft brush, slightly damp white cloth | Direct steam, bleach, acetone |
| Fabric seats and carpet | Shampoo, then extraction | Soaking, or leaving it wet for days |
| Headliner | Cleaner sprayed on the towel, not the roof | Spraying it directly, heat to dry |
| Glass | Glass cleaner, two towels | Ammonia on aftermarket tint |
The sources are the manufacturers themselves. Tesla says no glass cleaner or alcohol on the touchscreen, Toyota warns against alcohol on seats and the steering wheel, and Alcantara rules out direct steam. Your car came with a manual. It's in the glovebox, under three napkins and a parking ticket you've decided not to think about.

The order detailers clean a car interior in
Detailers clean a car interior top to bottom and dry before wet, so nothing you clean gets dirty again from above. Gravity is undefeated, and dust falls on whatever you finished five minutes ago.
- Empty it. Everything out, including the door pockets and under the seats.
- Mats out. Clean them away from the car so they dry while you work.
- Dry clean first. Brush vents, seams and the headliner, then vacuum from the top down.
- Hard surfaces. Interior cleaner on a towel for the dash, console, panels and door jambs.
- Seats and carpet. Spot treat, then shampoo and extract if they need it.
- Screens and glass last. Dry microfiber on screens, glass cleaner on the windows.
- Mats back in once everything is dry.
That's roughly how I run a Standard Interior, which takes about 40 minutes on a sedan and an hour on a big SUV. Yours will take longer, and that's fine. I've done it a few hundred times and I still find a single mystery sock.
How to deep clean a car interior
A deep clean adds the wet work a normal clean skips: shampoo and hot water extraction on fabric, steam through the seams and vents, light headliner cleaning, and leather cleaned and conditioned. It's for stains and ground-in dirt, not for a car that's just dusty.
On my menu that's the Interior Reset, from $249.99, about 2 hours on a sedan and 3 on a large SUV. A Standard Interior starts at $129.99. Prices by vehicle size and exactly what's included are on my interior detailing page.
The quick test: if a vacuum and a wipe fixed it last time, you need a clean. If you've already tried that and the seat still looks like it lost an argument with a smoothie, you need the deep one.

How to clean a car ceiling without making it sag
Clean a car ceiling by spraying a gentle cleaner onto a microfiber towel, never onto the headliner, then blotting lightly. The fabric is glued to a foam-backed board, and soaking it can loosen the glue and make the whole ceiling sag.
Chemical Guys, who sell headliner cleaner, say to spray the towel and let it air dry, no heat. One owner on a car forum paid $150 to have a sagging headliner recovered, which is a lot to spend on a coffee stain you'd mostly stopped seeing.
Pet hair removal: why the vacuum gives up
Pet hair weaves itself into carpet and upholstery, so a vacuum alone mostly skims the top. Loosen it first with a rubber brush or a pet hair stone, stroking in one direction only, then vacuum it up. Going back and forth just tucks the hair back in.
Some of it is permanent. On a heavily embedded coat, some hair stays in the weave, and anybody promising every last strand has never met a husky. My Pet Hair Removal add-on is priced Light or Heavy, from $50.00, because a light shed and a husky are not the same afternoon.

Steam cleaning a car interior
Steam lifts grime out of vents, seams, cup holders and switches without harsh chemicals. It helps sanitize where it's held close and long enough, but a quick pass cleans more than it disinfects.
Steam leaves the machine very hot, but a cleaning trade group measured it at about 174 to 207°F within nine inches of the nozzle, cooling fast with distance. Keep it off Alcantara, and off anything with a screen, unless you'd like to find out how much a screen costs.
Seats and carpets: shampoo, extract, then dry
Fabric seats and carpets get shampooed, agitated, then pulled back out with an extractor so the dirt leaves with the water. The part people skip is drying: the EPA says materials dried within 24 to 48 hours usually won't grow mold.
So go easy on the water. Toyota's own manual says not to wash the vehicle floor with water, because electronics live down there. A carpet you can hear squelch is a carpet that's been overserved.

Getting smells out of a car
A smell almost always has a source, so find it and remove it before you treat the air. Air fresheners only cover it, and the smell tends to win that negotiation within a week.
For a smell that survives a proper clean, my Cabin Odor Reset, from $80.00, runs an ozone treatment through the cabin and the air system, then airs the car out. Ozone is for an empty car with nobody in it. It's not a plug-in freshener, and it's definitely not something to sit in while you check your email.

How dirty is the inside of a car, really?
Dirtier than it looks, mostly on the things your hands touch. A peer-reviewed study of car interiors found the highest bacteria counts on the steering wheel, gear shifter, door handles and window switches.
You've probably seen the headline that a car is dirtier than a toilet. That came from a study of five used cars commissioned by a car-scrapping company, not peer-reviewed science. It found the trunk was the worst, which is unsurprising for a room nobody cleans and everybody throws gym bags into.
What I see in Valley interiors
The interiors that need more than a vacuum usually involve mud, dog hair or kids. The navy Model 3 in the photo above came to me with dried mud ground into the back seats, and that's an Interior Reset, not a vacuum job.
Alex wrote after I did two cars for him: "Great job removing the excessive amount of dog hair in the back seats." Jacob's review on his Model 3: "Left it spotless and smelling amazing. Even cleaned the trunk of my Tesla Model 3."
Where doing it yourself stops making sense: hair woven into the carpet, a smell that came back after you cleaned, a headliner stain you're scared to touch, or anything that's been damp long enough to smell like a basement. That's when paying somebody is cheaper than redoing it twice.

Questions people actually ask
What's the best way to clean the inside of a car?
Work dry before wet and top to bottom: empty the car, take the mats out, vacuum from the headliner down, wipe hard surfaces with a mild interior cleaner on a towel, clean screens with a dry microfiber, and do the glass last.
Can I use Windex in my car?
On factory glass, usually yes. Keep ammonia cleaners off aftermarket window tint, and keep glass cleaner off touchscreens entirely; Tesla's own guidance says to use a dry microfiber made for displays.
How long does it take to deep clean a car interior?
A standard interior clean takes me about 40 minutes on a sedan and an hour on a large SUV. A deep clean with shampoo, extraction and steam takes about 2 hours on a sedan and 3 on a large SUV.
How much does a professional interior clean cost?
Mine start at $129.99 for a Standard Interior and $249.99 for an Interior Reset, priced by vehicle size. Pet hair and odor removal are separate add-ons.
How do you get dog hair out of car carpet?
Loosen it first with a rubber brush or a pet hair stone, stroking in one direction only, then vacuum. A vacuum on its own rarely gets hair that's woven into the carpet.
