Paint correction that removes the damage instead of hiding it
Swirls, wash marks and oxidation are removed by machine polishing — permanently levelling the clear coat rather than filling it with glaze that washes away.
Swirls, scratches and haze — what they actually are
Your paint is a thin layer of clear coat over color. Nearly every defect you can see is a tiny valley cut into that clear layer. Correction removes a controlled amount of clear coat so the surface is level again and light reflects cleanly.
Swirl Marks
Fine circular scratches from automatic washes, dirty mitts and dry wiping. They're the haze you see under direct sun.
Removed — one or two stepsWash Scratches
Straight-line marring from grit dragged across the panel. Deeper than swirls but usually still inside the clear coat.
Removed — usually two stepsOxidation & Dullness
UV-degraded clear coat that has gone chalky and flat. Common on Valley cars parked outside year-round.
Improved — depends on depthEtching & Water Spots
Acidic or mineral deposits that have bitten into the clear coat. Shallow ones polish out; deep ones leave a mark.
Case by case — measured firstOne-step or two-step: how far we take it
The right level depends on how much clear coat you have and how much defect is in it. We decide together after the inspection — never before.
One-Step Correction
A single polishing stage that cuts and finishes at once. Best for newer or well-kept paint that looks dull rather than damaged.
- ✓ Decontamination wash, iron removal & clay
- ✓ Single cut-and-finish polishing stage
- ✓ Panel wipe-down to reveal true results
- ✓ Sealant applied to protect the finish
Two-Step Correction
A cutting stage to remove defects, then a refining stage to restore clarity and gloss. What we recommend under a 5- or 10-year coating.
- ✓ Decontamination wash, iron removal & clay
- ✓ Cutting stage to level defects
- ✓ Refining stage for clarity and gloss
- ✓ Paint depth checked panel by panel
- ✓ Ready for a ceramic coating the same visit

Why we measure before we polish
Clear coat is finite. Every correction removes a few microns of it, and once it's gone it cannot be replaced without a respray. That's why the inspection comes first — it tells us how aggressive we can safely be on your specific car.
Reading the gauge
1 mil = 25.4 microns (µm)Little clear coat left to work with, often from a previous correction. We use the gentlest option available or advise against polishing that panel.
Workable, but a one-step is usually the safe ceiling. We'd rather leave a few defects than run the clear coat down.
Where most modern vehicles sit. There's room for a full two-step correction with a healthy margin remaining.
Usually indicates repaint or added filler on that panel. More material, but repaint can be softer, so we test before committing.
Total readings cover paint, primer and clear together, so we read across every panel and compare. A panel that measures far higher or lower than the rest usually means repaint or a previous heavy polish — and we treat it far more conservatively.
Paint Depth Readings
An electronic gauge reads total film thickness in microns (µm) on every panel — typically 100–150 µm, or about 4–6 mils, on factory paint.
Defect Assessment
Under focused light we identify what's swirls, what's deeper scratching, and what has etched through.
Test Spot
We correct a small section with the least aggressive combination that works, then show you the result before committing to the whole car.
Honest Recommendation
You get the realistic outcome — including which defects we won't chase, and why removing them isn't worth the clear coat.
Correction is the work. A coating is what protects it.
Freshly corrected paint is bare and unprotected. Sealing it the same visit means the clarity you just paid for isn't re-marred by the next few months of washing — and SunCoat's warranty requires machine polishing on vehicles over three months old anyway.

Paint correction questions
No. If a scratch catches your fingernail it is usually through the clear coat, and removing it entirely would take more material than is safe. We improve how it reads in the light and tell you honestly which defects stay.
